Wine Trip to St Emillion
Bordeaux has always been on Evan and I’s list of places we wanted to visit but we never prioritized it as we were supposed to go with our best friends that live in London but between our crazy schedules we never had a date that overlapped. Then Evans best man called us and he was planning a trip to San Sebastian, Biartiz and Bourdeaux. So we decided to tag along- which meant two things. 1. I was planning 2. I was last minute planning. We found an, sorry I** found an incredible air bnb. It was in such a great part of town. Also, the interiors were amazing. High ceilings, moody paint colors, excellent art- it was a vibe. It also had incredible views and a rooftop deck. Side tangent- I hope to own a French Flat at some point in my life. I love the architecture. I digress.. but all Im saying it I think an Airbnb is the move. Which I normally advice against this because who doesn’t love their room made for them!
Okay enough about our place, the first night we landed crazy late. We had a 10:30 reservation at Met Mots, which we did not make. So we ended up eating charcuterie and drinking wine at the flat- but we walked by Met Mots, and it did seem like a vibe. The next day, we noticed we were by the the cutest café. It was called Eriu. I feel like at this point I am excellent at finding a coffee shop that is going to have alternative milks and matcha. Which bingo, this one did! They had amazing cookies (said the boys) and breakfast options, which we never indulged in! (also their take away cups, were adorable).
That day, we got a very late start. We went on a run around the city and ran along the river. It was my first time really out that day and wow! Was I amazed by Bourdeaux. It is so charming, so bustling. Its laid out so nicely where the beautiful churches pop up amongst the buildings and the ferris wheel is located in the center of the river. We ran down towards the Cite Du Vin (the wine museum, we will get there later). I was amazed how modern the shops were along the river.
For lunch that day we went to Berthus, which is in a very popular part of town. We were in a rush so decided to take an uber instead of walk. Which was not smart because the way the traffic goes in Bourdeaux it would have been faster to walk. The lunch spot was fabulous. It was a 3 course small menu. Pick a starter, main and dessert all from a selection of three options per section. I still dream of the salmon I had for lunch this day. Post lunch, we explored through the town and grabbed cocktails at Le Gabriel. It is a Michellin starred restaurant. We grabbed drinks outside before we had tickets to the Cite Du Vin. We had booked the sensory exhibit which includes a tasting. We learned this the hard way- do not be late! In fact show up 10 min early. We had a bit too much fun at cocktails and missed the exhibit so had to exchange our tickets for another date and time. We ended up heading across the street to Les Halles. It’s a food hall with a bunch of stands and restaurants. We enjoyed some of freshest seafood. Oysters, snails and shrimp. I normally am not one to jump for cold shrimp and oysters but these were delish! After learning the hard way that driving in Bordueax is not the fastest mode of transportation, we took to the scooters. This ended up being a highlight for all of us- scootering through Bordeaux.
Our air bnb was in such a good part of town as I mentioned previously and we decided to grab drinks at the bar by our place which was popping, SaBaBa. We met some fun locals and had some cocktails before our dinner reservation. Dinner that night was at Ressources. This also happened to be a very short walk from our flat. It has a Michellin star from this year (2024). The restaurant offers a la carte or a tasting menu. For the tasting menu they also offer two ways- one be surprised and two pick a selection. We chose to be surprised which was fun and we had different dishes then others so we were able to try different things. This meal was very fun made even better by their well priced wine selection.
The following day, Evan and I woke up and ran and then grabbed coffee for everyone at Eriu. We needed to have an early morning because we were scheduled to be picked up for a day out in St.Emillion. I scheduled a car service for the day and we started out at our first winery-______. Then we had lunch at the Grand Barrial. A stunning chateau with beautiful grounds, hotel and a beautiful restaurant on site. The food here was excellent. Again, we could choose between 2 or 3 course lunch.
The last winery we went to was a small family owned chateau,_____.
That evening we went to dinner at Le 482. This ended up being one of our favorite meals on the trip. It was so quaint. The only people working were the chef and one hostess. She was making the drinks, seating everyone etc. They had one menu which was on the chalkboard on the wall. And I had submitted I had an allergy at booking this spot. The chef personally had baked me gluten free bread and a gluten free pistachio cake for dessert- this just felt so charming. Not to mention the wines by the glass were all very well priced and excellent.
The Bourdeaux airport is especially small, just an fyi. We got there way too early for our flight and we learned past security there really are not many food options. So if you need nutrients make sure to get it pre security.
