If you find yourself with 4 hours in Salzburg like Evan and I did before a flight boy do we have the perfect walking tour for you. If you find yourself with longer time then I have some other suggestions for you below!
This particular tour starts off at Salzburg HBF and the first stop is Mirabel Palace. The Mirabel palace is a treat! Wow, according to Evan (and the research he did on our train) the gardens are modeled after Versailles, scenes from Sound of Music were filmed here and an old palace (now hosts events). It is worth a walk around outside in the gardens. Stop two will be to cross the pedestrian bridge with the locks. According to Evan the locks stand for eternal love. Fun fact number 2 by Evan. The name of this bridge is Marko Feingold-Steg. When you get off the bridge walk straight towards the Birthplace of Mozart it's in the Getreidegasse (shopping area) which is a beautiful street worth a stroll or more! Evan tried to take us to the oldest café in Salzburg but it was a Sunday and closed but this will be your next destination, Café Tomaselli, in operation for 300+ years! We then walked up to St Peters and went off to have lunch there! There is this restaurant that is almost kitschy but it is the oldest restaurant in Europe. We just so happened to visit when they were having their Valentines brunch which was quite fun! They have a cute outdoor bar area in the front as well that seems like it would be a fun time (again not open for us). We continued after lunch to the Monastery also where scenes from Sound of Music were filmed. This is the most gorgeous site I have ever seen. It was beautiful. We continued into the main square where the cathedral is and the fountain another filming location for the sound of music. If you have enough time, take the funicular up to the castle. Post your site seeing, you will grab a beer at the beer hall, Augustinerbräu Kloster Mülln. It is massive, has a ton of history & located on a street that is over 1000 years old. The beer hall is such an experience. Grab a mug, wash it out, pay and get it filled up! This area where the beer hall is, Aiglhofsiedlung has a lot of great restaurants nearby. One we read about that we did not go to was Barenwirt. Reviews seem good so add it to your list. Other things we did not do were grab drinks at the rooftop of the Wein Hotel. Something I would have loved to do is go to the Hellbrun Palace. It is a bit of a drive/tram from the main city but has film locations from the Sound of Music. |
