Sifnos is one of my favorite islands in Greece. Evan and I stumbled upon it somewhat accidentally on a trip, and it completely surprised us. It has that rare balance: understated, culinary-forward, deeply charming — and still relatively under the radar. When we first visited, it felt like a secret. Now, it seems to be having a renaissance. I’ve been trying to book our hotel for clients lately, and availability is suddenly much tighter — always a sign that word is getting out. Where We Stayed Verina Astra I found this hotel by what feels like pure luck. It’s tiny, intimate, and perched dramatically on the edge of the island with sweeping Aegean views. Every room feels like it’s suspended over the sea — positioned along the cliff so that you wake up to nothing but horizon. The infinity pool has a waterfall edge that blends seamlessly into the ocean beyond. But my favorite part? The gastronomy. The hotel’s main restaurant, Bostani, is exceptional. And the breakfast — I am not usually a hotel-breakfast person — was impeccable. Thoughtful, seasonal, beautifully executed. It felt intentional, not obligatory. Where to Eat & Drink Sifnos is known in Greece for its food culture, and it absolutely delivers. Omega 3 – Platis Gialos Inventive seafood with bold, modern Greek flavors right on the beach. A must. Cantina – Near Kastro Seaside dining with relaxed elegance. (This is near Kastro, not Apollonia.) Perfect for a long lunch that turns into sunset drinks. Loggia Wine Bar – Apollonia A charming wine bar in the heart of town. Ideal for a pre-dinner stop or a slow, late evening. Pelicanos – Platis Gialos A classic taverna-style option right on the sand. Simple, fresh, and exactly what you want after a swim. Astro Restaurant – Apollonia A more refined dinner option in town with a polished but still relaxed island feel. Kavos Sunrise – Kamares Casual beachfront dining — ideal for a laid-back lunch with your feet practically in the sand. What to See Panagia Poulati A small, whitewashed monastery dramatically set above the sea near Kastro. The walk down is beautiful, and the swimming spots below are some of the most serene on the island. Why Sifnos Feels Different Sifnos doesn’t try too hard. There’s no flashy party scene. No overwhelming luxury branding. Instead, it’s about rhythm: morning swims, long lunches, afternoon walks through stone paths, sunset wine, and dinners that stretch late into the night. It feels thoughtful. Culinary. Romantic without being showy. If you love Greece for its food, scenery, and slower pace — not just for beach clubs — Sifnos quietly outshines many of its more famous neighbors. |
