Valletta
Trabazu Wine Bar – wine bar serving wines from all over world. Also has wine by the glass from Malta- must try at least once! Chardonnay grapes + lighter reds grow here. Rampila Restaurant- in Valletta at the main gate. This spot is tucked up high within the walls. It is a Mediterranean restaurant that looks gorgeous from the street (and the pics) more than anything especially. The outdoor patio has great lighting and chic white umbrellas. Evan and I did not eat here but we walked by it day & night and it certainly grabs your attention. Based on the reviews the food looks so so. In my opinion, it would make a great spot for grabbing a wine or cocktail while the sun sets. The interior also looks equally stunning. Serves Mediterranean fare like pasta and meat dishes. Guze- Michelin guide, offers tasting menu (5 courses) with the choice between a land and sea menu. A la carte options like pork, lamb, rabbit and seafood (also has vegetarian option) Rubino- on the Michelin guide. This spot was a highlight meal of the trip but even of the year for Ev & me. Rubino is tucked away on old bakery street. It has multiple levels (try to sit in the middle section facing the open kitchen). The restaurant is small which makes it very intimate. The menu is written on a chalkboard and when Evan and I went, everything looked fantastic. We debated trying it all- Evan says we should have! There were dishes like Stracciatella and artichoke, meatballs, pork filet with thyme and honey, multiple pasta dishes, and fish dishes including seabass, shrimp and octopus. I am not sure if he was the owner but the main guy running the show could not be more friendly. He recommended a Maltese red wine to us that we had never had. The grape was called gellewza, local to Malta. It almost has a raisin taste to it- worth trying. Overall our experience here was 12 out of 10! 59 Republic- Also, on the Michelin guide. 59 Republic sits in St Georges Square. It has a petite yet very chic patio and serves very interesting food (a la carte or seasonal tasting menu). Dishes like iberico pork sandwich, lobster tacos, gin & tonic marinated salmon dip, ravillo, osso bucco and beef wellington. Caffe Cordina: been around since 1837. In the square by the biblioteque. Shocked us by how good the food was. Evan had an octopus salad and I had a Greek salad. There were Aperol spritz flowing here. (Beware a bit of a pigeon oasis over here. Servers pick up food quickly). Would not recommend for dinner, definitely a quick lunch spot if you are looking for some sunshine. If you want to sit inside, I wouldn’t recommend this spot either. Kingsway Bar & Café: Similar to Caffe Cordina, located right next door. Great spot for lunch. Also, has a live music in the evening. Le Bar at Phoenicia- bar at the hotel Evan and I stayed at. I loved the old school bar feel. Also, had a chardonnay from Malta that i fancied! Noni – Michelin star restaurant in Valletta located in an old bakery. My husband is very in to history and they are trying to use all of the same ovens from the old bakery that was there. Evan and I loved this meal. Its not necessary to do the tasting menu but I do recommend. It’s a great price point for a full tasting menu. The wine pairing is a great price as well. I am not sure if they serve the snacks or amuse bouche if you order a la carte but there was this olive dish they called “maltese olive” and it was the craziest flavours so another reason to try the tasting menu. Other dishes on this menu- a risotto (gluten free) or tortellini dish. Also, a fish dish and duck dish for the mains. For desserts, Evan had was served a almost savory dessert dish to kick off the dessert menu. It was not gluten free so they served me a dish with candy floss or “cotton candy”. Kamy Cocktail Bar- located by Rubino on old bakery street. This cocktail bar is quite cozy. The cocktails are all based on famous paintings and I wont spoil it but lets just say they are well decorated. If you don't like sweet cocktails as much maybe stick the the classics. Fun spot to go to before or after Rubino. Black Bull- Valletta; did not go to but recommended to us. Caffe Berry Valletta- popped in for coffee, is on the main street closer to the water- some wild coffees & pastries. Seems like the pistachio coffee was their signature. brunch spot and has a few gluten free items (check with counter as some are just wheat free and using spelt vs. fully gf) Nenu the Artisan Baker- recommended to us. we did not go but a casual spot serving Maltese food . The Bridge Bar- Jazz spot! Super cute location, great outdoor patio. St Johns Co Cathedral- located in Valletta. Famous church that has been around for awhile. Has a famous painting from Caravaggio that Evan geeked out over. Make sure to cover your shoulders when you visit here! Upper Gardens Phoenicia Hotel- gorgeous hotel in Valletta. Great spa (gym, indoor pool, sauna etc) and the property has a large outdoor pool area. Many restaurants in bars including Contessa, Beef Bar, Le Bar and and outdoor grill that serves the pool. Java- brunch C. Camilleri Dolceria- breakfast spot Crema- coffee & pastry shop in malta serving homemade bread. Malta is known for their bread- sourdough. Marascala Liska – waterfront restaurant in Marascala serving fresh seafood. Serving fresh caught fish that they will prepare to your liking. St. peters pool 3 coves- if you hire a sail boat for the day, this is a great swimming spot. Sliema: beach clubs: 1926 La Plage Dragonara Casino Other Sites worth seeing/doing: Singita Miracle Beach, by sandy beaches Gozo- see note below on blue grotto. Mdina Blue Grotto- recommend planning a day on a boat and seeing blue grotto and Gozo, takes 2 hours on a sail boat from to get there from Valletta.
